Banner Size Chart: Standard Sizes by
Use Case

Banners don't come in a fixed size the way paper does, they're cut to the space. But certain sizes

come up constantly for a reason, and knowing them saves a lot of back-and-forth with whoever's

actually hanging it.

Common vinyl banner sizes

Size Typical use
2 × 4 ft Small storefront signs, sale announcements
3 × 6 ft Storefronts, small event backdrops
3 × 8 ft Trade show booth backdrops
4 × 8 ft Building-mounted signage, larger storefronts
4 × 10 ft Roadside advertising, larger events
2 × 6 ft (retractable) Trade show pull-up banner stands
10 × 20 ft+ Building wraps, stage backdrops

How big should the text actually be?

Match letter height to viewing distance, the mistake almost everyone makes is designing a banner that looks great up close and unreadable from the street.

Viewing distance Minimum letter height
10 ft 1 in
25 ft 2.5 in
50 ft 5 in
75 ft 7.5 in
100 ft 10 in
200 ft (highway) 20 in

The banner design mistake you only notice from across the parking lot

Banner proofs get approved on a laptop screen, which is exactly the wrong distance to judge them from. Text that looks bold and readable at arm's length can vanish into nothing once the banner is fifteen feet up and you're reading it from a moving car. The 1-inch-per-10-feet rule above exists because eyeballing it on a monitor almost always leads to text that's too small, when in doubt, size up, not down.

Resolution works the other direction: banners don't need anywhere near the 300 DPI a business card needs, because nobody's standing six inches from a storefront sign. 100 to 150 DPI at final size prints perfectly sharp from normal viewing distance, and insisting on more just means a heavier file with no visible benefit.

Banner size FAQs

What is a standard banner size?

3×6 ft and 4×8 ft are the most common vinyl banner sizes for storefronts and events, though banners are typically custom-cut to the space rather than fixed sizes.

How big should text be on a banner?

Roughly 1 inch of letter height per 10 feet of viewing distance. Text read from 50 feet needs letters at least 5 inches tall.

What size banner do I need for a trade show booth?

A standard 10×10 ft booth typically uses a 2×6 ft to 3×8 ft banner, sized to the back wall or table width.

What resolution should banner artwork be?

100–150 DPI at final size, far lower than the 300 DPI needed for close-up items like business cards.

Do banner sizes need bleed?

Less than cut products, since banners are usually hemmed and grommeted. Keep text and logos 2–3 inches from the edge to avoid grommet holes or hem folds.
